Two of the clearer examples sitting side-by-side in 2026 are the MLS Innovation Lab and the NHL Innovation Lab. They share a common ambition—get better technology into the game faster—but they are structured very differently. One runs on cohorts and real-world event testing. The other built a permanent simulated arena and called it a lab. Both are worth understanding if you care about how professional sports are quietly changing their relationship with startups and infrastructure. MLS Innovation Lab: Cohort Model with Real Stakes Major League Soccer formalized its innovation efforts with the launch of the MLS Innovation Lab. By 2026 the program is in its third year and has settled into a clear rhythm: select a small group of companies, give them access to the league’s ecosystem, and let them prove the technology works in actual soccer environments. The focus areas are consistent—player performance, fan engagement, and media production. The 2026 cohort reflects that mix with a strong tilt toward AI. Springbok Analytics turns MRI data into detailed 3D muscle analytics so teams can track muscle health and injury risk with more precision. Orreco brings bio-analytics and an AI-powered Motion Signal product aimed at identifying injury risk from tracking data. Fit:match uses smartphone-based 3D scanning to capture athlete body data for youth development and talent identification; former USMNT player Jozy Altidore is an investor, and Apple is assisting with R&D. Advanced Image Robotics works on AI-powered robotic camera systems for more affordable multi-camera production. WMT AI Ticketing focuses on dynamic pricing and distribution. The practical value of the program is access. Companies get to test inside MLS NEXT events, Generation adidas Cup, All-Star activities, and other league properties. MLS also retains the option to take equity at the end of the cycle. That combination—real environments plus a potential commercial path—separates it from pure demo-day accelerators. MLS is essentially saying: show us the technology works on our pitches, with our players and our fans, and then we can talk about deeper partnership. It is pragmatic, event-driven, and deliberately tied to the calendar of a growing league. NHL Innovation Lab: A Permanent Proving Ground The NHL took a different route. In April 2026 it opened the NHL Innovation Lab powered by Verizon inside the Prudential Center in Newark, in partnership with the New Jersey Devils. It is described as the first dedicated simulated-arena R&D facility operated by a U.S. professional sports league. This is not a cohort program. It is a physical space—practice rink and game rink connected by Verizon’s private 5G network—where the league and its technology partners can install, test, and iterate year-round without waiting for a game-day window or a temporary install. Think of it as the league’s “33rd arena,” but one designed for experimentation rather than ticket sales. Early priorities include officiating tools (high-stick detection via Hawk-Eye is an explicit goal), coach-to-player video on the bench, advanced media workflows with Sony for high-resolution content, and various fan and operations applications. The private 5G network provides the low-latency, high-bandwidth foundation required for many of these use cases. Sony Crystal LED displays and other production technology are already in place. The NHL’s approach is infrastructure-first. Instead of bringing startups into a fixed program cycle, it built a controlled environment where technologies can be validated under hockey-specific conditions. That reduces risk for both the league and its partners and shortens the distance between prototype and potential deployment. Two Models, One Underlying Shift Both reflect the same broader change: leagues are no longer content to be late-stage customers. They want earlier visibility, tighter feedback loops, and the ability to shape tools around the actual constraints of their sport. Soccer and hockey present different technical challenges—pitch size, continuous play, ice surface, board and glass interactions, cold-environment electronics—but the institutional response is similar. Create a structured way to learn faster than the open market would allow. For founders the distinction matters. The MLS Innovation Lab is a defined entry point with a clear timeline and public cohort. Success looks like surviving real event testing and converting that into a commercial relationship. The NHL Innovation Lab is less of an open application funnel and more of a destination for technologies that already have a path into hockey operations or broadcast. Getting in requires different relationships and a solution that fits the physical and network environment the league has built. What This Signals for the Rest of the Industry A few practical observations follow. First, performance and health technologies continue to sit at the center of league interest. Muscle analytics, injury-risk modeling, and athlete measurement tools appear in both ecosystems. Leagues have skin in the game on availability and long-term player health; tools that improve those metrics have a clearer path than pure novelty. Second, media and production technology remains a high-priority area. MLS is testing robotic cameras and AI-assisted workflows. The NHL is investing in high-resolution capture and low-latency distribution inside its lab. As rights deals grow more complex and content demand increases, production efficiency becomes a competitive advantage. Third, the infrastructure layer is becoming a differentiator. Private 5G, dedicated testing environments, and integrated tracking systems are no longer optional experiments. They are the foundation that makes more advanced applications possible. The NHL’s decision to stand up a permanent lab is a bet that controlled, repeatable testing will compound over time. Finally, equity and commercial pathways are becoming more explicit. MLS keeps the option to invest. Other leagues have similar mechanisms. The old model of pure pilot-with-no-follow-through is less common. Leagues want optionality on the companies that prove useful. Looking Ahead Neither program is perfect, and neither is finished. Cohort models can get bottlenecked by calendars and how many companies they can actually digest in a year. Permanent labs need real money and adult supervision or they risk turning into very expensive tech museums. In the end, both will be judged by a simple test: did the technology that went through them make the game better or the experience better for the people who play and watch it? What’s already clear is the direction of travel. Leagues are done waiting for technology to show up fully formed. They’re building their own on-ramps—some based on cohorts and events, some based on actual physical labs—so the distance between “interesting prototype” and “we can actually use this” gets shorter. MLS and the NHL just chose different floor plans for the same project. Both are taking the problem more seriously than the old “let’s run a pilot and see what happens” approach. For anyone building in sports technology, the message is pretty straightforward: the leagues are no longer just customers sitting at the end of the sales cycle. In different ways, they’ve started acting like laboratories.
