It is about who sits between your pulse and the model that talks to you all day.

Garmin already owns the serious training file: pace, power, HRV, Body Battery, the decade of loops you would not re-enter by hand. Meta already owns the other half of the day — the camera on the face, the microphone in the frame, the social graph, and an assistant it wants in your glasses. Those two graphs started touching in September 2025 — and by January 2026, when the two companies showed up together at CES, the touch had become a partnership too consistent to be accidental. That is the land grab. It is also a partnership, which is how land grabs look when both sides still need something the other already built.

Two Theories of the Same Few Inches

Garmin’s theory is old and durable. Put accurate sensors on people who already train. Make the watch good enough that they will not switch. Keep core metrics in Connect without a mandatory fee, then sell Connect+ — about $7 a month — for the interpretive layer: Active Intelligence, extra dashboards, nutrition. CIRQA is the screenless bid for the 24/7 slot WHOOP and the rings made fashionable. The company will sign a HIPAA business associate agreement for its Health SDK. Consumer Connect is a different product: useful, cloud-backed, not a clinic. Some Garmin watches can still do work on the device if you never sync. That option is the closest thing this category has to an off-ramp, and it is incomplete. The moment you want the app, the file has a second home.

Meta’s theory is newer and hungrier. Zuckerberg has said wearable AI should replace the phone as the way you talk to software. Connect 2026 made the bet visible: more than a hundred styles of AI glasses across Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Meta by year-end; audio-only frames without a camera; Gen 3 Ray-Bans; Muse, the agent, headed to the glasses so it can coach, log, book, and “help buy products you see.” The Neural Band already reads muscle signals at the wrist to drive the display glasses. A full Meta watch — reported internally as Malibu 2 — would collapse that band into a health tracker and a gesture hub. Treat the watch as a rumor until it is on a wrist in a store. Treat the glasses as shipped. The strategy does not require the watch to be true. It requires the face to become a computer that also wants your heart rate.

Garmin sells a record of what your body did. Meta sells a record of what your body was looking at, saying, and about to buy.

When those records join, the session is no longer a private training file. It is context for an agent that works for a company whose other product is the ad graph.

The Partnership Is the Tell

If this were only a watch war, Garmin would ignore the glasses and Meta would ship a mediocre band and call it fitness. Instead Garmin opened a pipe. In September 2025, live pace, speed, and heart rate began flowing to the frames through a Connect IQ app — first with Oakley Meta Vanguard, then expanded that November to Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN. LEDs on the glasses can track zones. Milestones can trigger the glasses to record. After the fact, the Meta app can stamp metrics on video and send it to Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp. That is distribution Garmin cannot buy with another Fenix colorway. It is also a second processor touching data Garmin spent twenty years teaching athletes to trust.

The car demo, from CES in January 2026, is the same logic in leather. EMG on the wrist, Garmin in the dash. Input platform plus cabin platform. Neither company has to win the whole stack today. They have to be the default when the stack gets assembled.

Google is in the same collision from the other side. Fitbit Air is a cheap always-on pebble. Google Health is the app. Garmin users have been trying to get Cardio Load in that app to recognize a Garmin workout. A September 2026 Health update finally used incoming heart-rate sessions to compute Google’s own load number — not Garmin’s Training Readiness, not HRV, not VO2. The deep file stays in Connect. The shallow file leaks into the other OS. That is what “open” looks like when three platforms want to be the scoreboard.

Oura and WHOOP are fighting a smaller war: who rents the night. Garmin and Meta are fighting over who interprets the day that follows.

What Meta Wants That a Watch Cannot Give

A watch sees the arm. Glasses see the world. That is why Hamburg’s data-protection office spent roughly 50 pages on Ray-Ban Meta glasses this month. The LED that is supposed to warn bystanders they are on camera is often too dim to notice. Wearers, not only Meta, can be on the hook for consent. The sharper finding is training. Since 2025 Meta has treated European AI training on interactions as opt-out — internally framed around “Flywheel data.” Conversations and captured scenes can feed models unless someone objects. Faces and voices that are not the wearer’s change the legal math. A fitness watch that mis-scores sleep is a consumer-protection story. Glasses that ingest a sidewalk are a public-space story. Meta just shipped a camera-free audio pair, which is an admission that the camera is the part of the product people flinch at. The agent still wants a stream. Muse on glasses that can “buy what you see” is the commercial version of the same appetite.

None of that requires Meta to beat Garmin at VO2. It requires Meta to be the layer that asks the question out loud while Garmin supplies the number. The land grab is the question layer. Once the assistant is in the ear, the sensor of record is whoever the assistant is allowed to query.

What Garmin Wants That a Social Network Cannot Fake

Athletes already gave Garmin the longitudinal file: years of threshold tests, sleep that is good enough for training decisions, courses, and load. That file is painful to recreate. It is why people stay through ugly watch faces and why Connect+ can exist as a nice-to-have instead of a lock on the raw scores. Garmin’s risk is not that Meta builds a better cycling computer next spring. It is that the athlete starts asking Muse instead of opening Connect, and Muse only needs a slice of the file to feel useful.

Feeding that slice to the glasses is rational. It also trains the user to treat Garmin as a sensor pack for someone else’s coach. Health Connect into Google is the same pattern. MCP-style bridges that dump Connect into a chatbot are the hobbyist version. The destination of the file is drifting off the watch.

Garmin can still win the sport. Meta can still win the hours that are not sport. The uncomfortable middle is the commute, the walk, the recovery day — the hours CIRQA and Air and the rings were built to colonize — now also available to a pair of frames that can listen.

The Premium Inch

This is the same land grab as the ring-and-band essay, with a worse camera.

WHOOP, Oura, Garmin, and Google already converged on the wrist and finger because that is where recurring revenue attaches to a body that does not take the device off. Meta’s move is to attach the model to the face and then borrow the wrist. A Neural Band or a future watch is how the glasses stop being a camera you forget to charge. Garmin’s move is to remain the trusted meter and rent the reading to whoever owns the next display — glasses, car, phone, chatbot.

Consumer Reports’ connected-car work is the ugly preview: vehicles and their apps sending location and identifiers toward Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft. Wearables are a tighter, more intimate version of the same plumbing. Heart rate is not a VIN. Combined with where you ran, what the glasses saw, and what Muse offered to buy, it is closer to a profile than a lap time.

EFF’s recent pass over watches, rings, and bands is the other footnote. Transparency reports are rare. On-device-only modes are limited. Encryption in transit still leaves the company able to read the file in the cloud. Apple is the outlier people cite. Garmin at least lets some sport happen without a mandatory membership. Meta’s glasses business is the opposite instinct: more styles, more hours on the face, an agent that gets more useful the more it is allowed to remember.

What to Do With the File You Already Created

If you train, Garmin is still the least bad sensor of record for the session. That does not require Connect+ and it does not require pairing the watch to a face computer.

If you pair them, assume the highlight video is the point of the pipe. Assume voice queries about heart rate are also queries that live in Meta’s assistant stack. Read the glasses training toggle as a product decision, not a footnote.

If you wear glasses in public, the Hamburg report is the document, not the marketing LED.

If you care about a recovery score, remember the last year of this blog: marketing percentages outrun validation; subscriptions attach to interpretation; the device you own is not the product you keep getting. Adding Meta to that list does not make Garmin virtuous. It makes the stack longer.

The land grab is easy to miss because it looks like a feature. Live heart rate in the lens is a good feature. So was a scorekeeper that started streaming youth games. So was a ring that turned a night into a number. Each time, the company that owned the hour started renting the meaning of the hour. Garmin still owns a lot of the hour you are working. Meta wants the hour you are living, and it will take the working file as a feed. The partnership is how they both get to say yes. The person on the sidewalk, and the person whose pulse just became a prompt, are the inventory.

Sources

Garmin–Meta AI glasses integration via Connect IQ: live HR, pace, zone LEDs, highlight capture, social overlay. Garmin newsroom, September 2025; expanded to Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN, November 2025.

Garmin Unified Cabin and Meta Neural Band automotive proof of concept. Garmin newsroom, CES, January 2026.

Meta Connect 2026: AI glasses lineup, Ray-Ban Meta Audio (camera-free), Gen 3, Muse headed to glasses, VR glasses. Meta newsroom.

Reported Meta watch work (“Malibu 2”) as unconfirmed companion to glasses / Neural Band — treat as roadmap reporting, not a shipped SKU.

Hamburg Commissioner review of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, September 2026: bystander notice, wearer responsibility, AI-training / “Flywheel” opt-out structure. Full report (PDF).

Garmin Connect+ pricing and positioning versus free core tracking; consumer Connect not covered by Garmin’s Health SDK HIPAA BAA. Paubox, “Is Garmin Connect HIPAA compliant?”.

Google Health 5.09 using Garmin heart-rate sessions for Google’s Cardio Load while keeping Garmin readiness metrics in Connect, September 2026. 9to5Google.

EFF survey of wearable privacy features and transparency (EFF, July 2026); Consumer Reports connected-vehicle data sharing including Meta as a recipient (Consumer Reports).

Avanti.
