It is now the default way millions of families watch your favorite 10-year-old’s at-bat from another state, and one of the few consumer apps that can tell you, in public numbers, how large youth sports media has become.

Today, as part of Dick’s Sporting Goods, GameChanger scorekeeping covers baseball, softball, basketball, football, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, and water polo. Baseball and softball account for most of that volume, with over 8 million of the roughly 10 million total games scored in the last year.

Dick’s Sporting Goods calls GameChanger the operating system of youth sports. That is more than marketing fluff, it has become true. Schedules, scorekeeping, livestreams, spray charts, highlight clips, and the family group chat now live in one place. The company covers nearly 10 million games a year across more than one million teams, with about 10 million unique active users and more than 6 million hours of livestreamed video. Fiscal 2025 sales were nearly $150 million, on a run that Dick’s has described as close to a 40 percent sales CAGR since 2017.

GameChanger is more than a scorebook. It is now in its own right a media company that leverages the camera that is already at the ballfield and in the parent’s hands.

GameChanger has changed the role of scorekeeper — from an oversized notebook to real-time judgment on whether the person doing the scoring actually knows how to score they’re applying. I know that pressure firsthand, from years as a “GameChanger Guy” myself.

The rest of the Saturday is still analog, and increasingly, Dick’s is there. Kids still need to be taught how to hit, and somebody still has to run the tournament that gives the app something to film. Partners and investments come into play. EL1 Sports is MLB’s official youth baseball and softball training partner, running instruction, club academies, and community programs that sit on the same developmental map GameChanger films. Unrivaled Sports runs the events themselves — the tournaments, the destination camps, the showcases where the recording and the training actually happen. The connection between all three is not a co-branded splash page. It is a stack: one company runs the event, one captures it, and one tries to improve the player who will be back at the next one.

From Fungo Media to a Retailer’s Media Arm

The company began in 2009 as Fungo Media, founded by Ted Sullivan and Kiril Savino, and shipped an iPhone scorekeeper for baseball and softball. The original job was narrow and thankless: a volunteer coach, one device, every pitch. In many ways, being the GameChanger parent still is thankless.

Little League made it the authorized scorekeeping app. MaxPreps, Perfect Game, Cal Ripken, and USA Baseball followed. Basketball came later. The product was free for coaches. Families who wanted extra stats and recaps paid. There were no ads. Subscriptions were the business.

Dick’s bought GameChanger in November 2016 and folded it into what was then Team Sports HQ, next to other youth-league software deals. Edward Stack’s, then CEO and now Executive Chairman, public rationale was that the retailer needed a relationship with teams that did not begin and end at the register. The acquisition looked, at the time, like a digital accessory to selling bats. It turned out to be the opposite. GameChanger users spend more at Dick’s than non-users. The app became a demand signal wearing a box score.

The strategy that Dick’s is implementing has been tried before mostly unsuccessfully. Under Armour spent the mid-2010s assembling Connected Fitness. The clothing company could own the workout too. Under Armour bought MapMyFitness — MapMyRun and MapMyRide — in 2013 for about $150 million. In 2015 it added MyFitnessPal for $475 million and Endomondo for an undisclosed sum. The thesis was familiar: put a free app on the phone, collect the athlete data, sell them shoes. These apps were real products with real users. They were also individual logs. What was missing was the weekly ritual. The users who often logged workouts on multiple apps went elsewhere. Strava won a lot of the category. The youth Saturday game is not optional. There was no volunteer scorekeeper, no grandparents on the stream, no box score that had to exist for the league to function. When the novelty faded, UA was left with three consumer utilities that did not make anyone buy more gear.

The unwind was public. Endomondo shut down at the end of 2020. MyFitnessPal sold to Francisco Partners that November for $345 million — more than $100 million under what UA had paid five years earlier, before earnouts. MapMyFitness lingered as the last piece of the digital strategy. In September 2024 UA sold the suite — MapMyRun, MapMyRide, MapMyWalk — to Outside, the media company run by MapMyFitness co-founder Robin Thurston. The apps stayed up and folded into Outside’s subscriber base. UA booked the cash as an $8 million sale. A $150 million running platform came home for a rounding error.

Nike’s FuelBand and the first wave of Nike+ training apps followed a similar arc: a brand paid up for a closed fitness graph, then discovered that logging miles is not the same as owning a season. GameChanger worked for the reason those deals did not. Dick’s did not buy a diary. It bought the official record of an event that already gathers a team, a family, and a reason to open the app every week. The subscription sits on the family that cannot be at the field, not on a jogger who can switch to Strava in an afternoon. That is why a scorekeeper can become a media platform and a logoed calorie counter has not.

Sameer Ahuja now runs the GameChanger business out of New York. The 2018 NFHS partnership put the app deeper into high school. A USA Baseball clinic partnership the same year pushed it toward instruction. The product still scored games. The company was already looking for the next layer. Then video and a pandemic shifted the strategy.

Pandemic Made Everyone a Broadcaster

In 2020, stands emptied. Grandparents who had lived inside the live scoreboard could not stand behind the backstop in person. GameChanger added livestreaming in a hurry. Ahuja has described the decision as an afternoon, not a five-year roadmap. By 2022 the company was calling itself the largest youth-sports streamer in the country. Scoring plus video plus an auto-generated recap made a 12U game look, at least on a phone, like a broadcast.

That is the origin of the current business. Scorekeeping created the graph of the game. Streaming added a larger audience. AI started cutting the tape. AutoStream followed the ball in basketball. Film Room stripped dead ball out of basketball and volleyball film. The February 2026 overhaul — the largest in fifteen years — pushed every stream to 1080p, added automated postgame highlights, and kept the score bug, box score, and app-generated play-by-play. Coaches still stream from a phone. The compression and transmission stack is what changed. Pixellot’s fixed SinglePlay cameras, piloted across rec leagues in 2025, doubled followership and views where they were installed. A QR code at the field can add a spectator phone as another angle.

The free tier tightened at the same time. Baseball and softball viewers now get five full-game streams before a subscription. Paid tiers unlock unlimited viewing, highlights, fuller box scores, voice overlay, and AI recaps. Coaches and staff still get the scoring tools free. The paying customer is the family that cannot be there — or the family that wants the clip for a coach who was not there either.

Youth-sports streaming is no longer a side feature. Industry estimates put the broader category near $10 billion when you include recruiting tape, facility cameras, and family viewing. GameChanger is not the whole market. LiveBarn and Spiideo sell venue systems. Hudl is the nearest competitor by attention, not by use case — it thrives in the coach’s tape room, built around smart cameras, film review, recruiting, and scouting for schools and serious programs. It is not built for Saturday recreational scoring, which is exactly the gap GameChanger fills. Showcase operators sell access to evaluators. GameChanger’s advantage is distribution already sitting in the dugout. The scorer is the camera operator. The box score is the metadata. That combination is why Dick’s now describes GameChanger as a live sports media platform rather than a youth app.

Analytics Arrived as a Byproduct

The stats were there first. More than 150 baseball and softball measures, spray charts, pitch counts, Quality At-Bat as a process stat meant to discount luck. Then the archive became large enough to train models on what live play looks like versus downtime. Then the same file became a highlight, a recruiting clip, and a coaching teach.

That sequence matters. Most youth analytics products start with a sensor and hunt for a use case. GameChanger started with a use case — keep the book — and inherited a dataset no lab could have commissioned. Almost six million games scored in a single year, against a couple hundred thousand games in the entire history of Major League Baseball, is the comparison the company likes to make. It is also why MLB noticed.

In June 2023, MLB and GameChanger signed a multiyear deal. MLB content moved into the app as instruction. GameChanger scoring and streaming moved onto official youth events, including the RBI World Series and the MLB All-American Game. RBI teams received free subscriptions. Youth highlights could surface on MLB platforms. The league got a pipe into households it does not own. The app got a stamp that rec ball software rarely gets.

Elite events followed the same logic. Streaming the UA Next All-America Game from Camden Yards in 2025 was a different job than a Saturday rec game, but it used the same pipe: one platform, one scorebug, one audience that already knew the interface.

A note on names: GameChanger Analytics (https://gcanalytics.ai/) is a separate Bay Area soccer-wearable startup building performance sensors. It is not the Dick’s app. The confusion is a compliment the category did not earn on purpose.

Where EL1 Fits

EL1 does not compete with GameChanger for the livestream. It competes for the hours before the game and after the livestream, when a parent decides whether the kid needs more than team practice.

EL1 Sports is MLB’s official youth baseball and softball training partner. It sells small-group instruction from college and pro players, team training, camps, and a “Powered By” layer for organizations that need admin and technology help. It operates or supports club-branded academies — Dodgers, Mariners, Twins, White Sox, Pirates, Guardians — and community programs tied to Play Ball and Nike RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities, a program for youth outreach operated by Major League Baseball to provide young people in underserved and diverse communities). Tony Reagins, MLB Chief Baseball Development Officer, has described the partnership as access, not just a logo. The league gets training infrastructure in markets. EL1 gets the institutional backing to look like part of the official pathway rather than another travel-ball vendor.

Put them next to each other and the youth-baseball stack looks like this:

GameChanger is how the game is recorded, watched, and turned into a stat line and a clip.

EL1 is how a player is supposed to get better between those games.

Unrivaled Sports, the newest piece, is where a growing share of those games are actually played — the tournaments and destination events GameChanger films and EL1 trains kids toward.

MLB sits on two of the three, and Dick’s sits on all three. Youth baseball and softball still has a grassroots system worth funding.

They meet in the same households. A family that already pays for unlimited streams is the family that will pay for a 6:1 hitting group. A club academy that wants to look professional will score on GameChanger and train inside an EL1-operated cage. RBI is the explicit overlap: MLB funds access, GameChanger waives the family subscription for participating teams, EL1 is in the training-partner structure that is supposed to make the access real.

None of that requires a merger. It requires the same kid to exist in both databases. The risk is the usual youth-sports risk: the rec player gets a beautiful stream and no instruction, or the academy player gets instruction and a private clip the family still has to wrangle. The opportunity is a loop. Clip from Saturday, session on Tuesday, better at-bat next Saturday, new clip.

Dick’s has another reason to care. GameChanger users already over-index in the stores. An athlete who trains in a club academy still needs a bat, spikes, and a bag. The retailer owns the camera app and wants the training ecosystem to stay inside baseball rather than draining into adjacent sports. EL1’s job, from that angle, is to keep the next season happening.

The Third Leg: Unrivaled Sports

The stack got a third piece on May 6, 2025, when Dick’s Sporting Goods led a $120 million investment in Unrivaled Sports through DSG Ventures, the retailer’s venture arm.

Unrivaled Sports is not a media company or a training company. It is the events layer — a youth sports experience business that owns and operates the tournaments, destination camps, and complexes where the games GameChanger streams actually get played. Its properties include Cooperstown All Star Village, Ripken Baseball Experiences, Diamond Nation, We Are Camp, Rocker B Ranch, and Unrivaled Flag. Combined, they run across more than 30 states and reach over 600,000 young athletes a year, which puts Unrivaled’s footprint in the same order of magnitude as GameChanger’s own user base, just on the field instead of on the screen.

The tie to GameChanger is not theoretical. GameChanger already provides livestream coverage of Unrivaled’s marquee event, the Ripken Nationals Championship at Cooperstown All Star Village, a relationship made explicit in an April 2026 tri-partnership announcement with Under Armour and confirmed again in a June 2026 release covering the 2026 Ripken National Championships. The youth athlete who plays in that tournament is filmed by the same app that scores his rec-league games. The stream is not a side deal bolted onto an unrelated event; it is the same pipe, pointed at a bigger stage.

A family’s season can now run entirely through properties Dick’s either owns outright or has a meaningful stake in: play the tournament at an Unrivaled property, get streamed and scored on GameChanger, train in between at an EL1 academy, and buy the bat, the bag, and the cleats at Dick’s. Outside reporting on the retailer’s broader strategy has already named the pattern — a flywheel in which a young athlete plays an Unrivaled event, follows the games on GameChanger, buys equipment from Dick’s, and stays connected through the company’s ScoreCard rewards program. None of the four pieces requires the others to function. Together, they mean Dick’s no longer needs to wait for a family to walk into a store. It can meet them at the tournament gate, on the livestream, and in the training session, and let the register be the last stop rather than the first.

The acquisition logic is the same one that explains GameChanger and EL1: buy the layer of youth sports infrastructure closest to where a family already spends a Saturday, and let the retail relationship follow. Unrivaled simply extends the stack one level further back, to the event itself, rather than to the recording or the coaching of it.

What the Rise Actually Costs

Professionalization of the Saturday game and youth sports in general has a bill.

Streaming made absence survivable and recruiting starts earlier. It also made every error permanent and every 9-year-old’s swing a file. Five free views, then a paywall, is a mild version of the same logic Oura uses on a ring: the hardware — here, the phone and the volunteer scorer — is in the customer’s hand; the useful layer is rented. Youth sports streaming at industry scale invites the same questions as any other camera network: who owns the footage, who can use it for evaluation, and what happens when a parent’s phone is part of the production.

Analytics followed the same curve. Spray charts help a coach. They also feed the travel-ball economy that sells the next showcase. Quality At-Bat is a good developmental idea. It is also a number that will be misunderstood on a 10U recruiting profile.

EL1 exists partly because that economy left a hole. Not every kid needs a national circuit. Many need a competent adult, a small group, and a place that is not a tournament hotel. If GameChanger is the broadcast layer of youth baseball, EL1 is a bet that the sport still requires gyms and instructors, not only metadata.

The honest read is that all three pieces are winning versions of the same trend. Youth sports became media. Media needs inventory. Inventory needs an event to generate it and a player who keeps playing. The app keeps the audience. The academy keeps the roster. Unrivaled keeps the calendar full of games worth filming. MLB keeps a development story it can put on a broadcast, and Dick’s keeps a family inside its properties from the tournament gate to the checkout line.

GameChanger’s next five years are about whether 1080p and AI clips turn a scorekeeper into a network without making the rec field feel like a content studio. EL1’s next five years are about whether club academies and RBI sites can absorb the kids that the streams made visible. Unrivaled’s next five years are about whether a $120 million bet on owning the events themselves pays off the way the media and training bets already have. The connection is the kid in the box. Everything else is infrastructure around that at-bat.

Endnotes

1.
